Crime Prevention Services
The
Crime Prevention Resource Center is located in the YSU Police
Department, Clingan-Waddell building, at the corner of West Wood
Street and Fifth Avenue. The Crime Prevention Resource Center
provides information and programming for the entire University
community. Specially trained YSU Police Department staff present
seminars to new and prospective students, residence hall staff, and
student organizations, as well as to YSU faculty and staff. The
Crime Prevention Resource Center offers campus and dorm safety tips,
information on properly securing valuables, auto theft prevention,
self-defense training, and many other topics.
The Crime Prevention Resource Center acts as liaison for crime
prevention programs and initiatives between the YSU Police
Department and local law enforcement agencies, such as the
Youngstown City Police Department and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s
Office. The Crime Prevention Resource Center also works with local
businesses by providing crime prevention information, security
surveys, and special programming. The Crime Prevention Resource
Center compiles campus and local crime statistics, which are
published annually in the Your Right to Know brochure, as mandated
by the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990.
Call the Crime Prevention Resource Center at 330-941-1987 or dial
1987 from any campus phone.
Student Security Service
The YSU Police Department sponsors the YSU Student Security Service
program which provides free escort services for students and
employees traveling from one campus location to another. The YSU
Student Security Service staff are carefully selected and trained by
YSU Police Officers in crime prevention measures and patrol
techniques. They are linked by radio to the YSU Police Department
Communications Center and make regular reports during their rounds.
The YSU Student Security Service is available to any member of the
YSU Community who prefers not to cross campus alone. Members of the
campus community with disabilities are encouraged to make special
arrangements to be safely escorted to any campus location, day or
evening. The YSU Student Security Service can also escort you to
the near North Side if an officer is also available to assist with
the escort. Staff can be scheduled to meet you at your car at a
specific time and location if you are driving to campus. If
traveling via WRTA, you can be met at the drop-off point.
To request the services of an escort, please call 330-941-1515 (off
campus) or ext. 1515 from any on-campus phone. The YSU Student
Security Service supervisor will record the necessary information
and immediately dispatch an escort to your location (usually in less
than five minutes). You can be scheduled on a regular basis by
informing the supervisor, thus eliminating the necessity to call
each time.
Escorts are available Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.,
Fridays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., each day
classes are in session. The exceptions are summer semester and
during breaks when escorts are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Monday through Friday. After hours and on holidays and weekends,
contact the YSU Police Department at 330-941-3527 if you need an
escort, or dial ext. 3527 from any on-campus phone. You can
recognize the YSU Student Security Service employees by their red
shirts and special photo I.D. tags.
YSU Police
The Youngstown State University Police Department employs 23
full-time and 150 part-time commissioned officers with full police
powers, including the authority to make arrests. All officers are
graduates of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and must
undergo periodic training to upgrade their skills. YSU Police
Officers are armed and receive annual firearms training as well as
emergency medical, first aid, and CPR education. Officers patrol
campus on foot and in vehicles 24 hours a day. Their efforts are
coordinated with local law enforcement officials and the Ohio State
Patrol to enforce both state and local laws, as well as University
rules and regulations. The Department routinely reports criminal
incidents to appropriate police agencies.
The YSU Police Department has a mutual aid agreement with the
Youngstown City Police Department permitting YSU Police Officers to
exercise the same police authority as the YPD on the North Side of
Youngstown. The agreement helps to ensure a safe and secure
environment for the YSU community.
In cooperation with other University departments, the YSU Police
Department offers a variety of educational programs designed to
promote awareness and prevention. Among the programs offered are
presentations on personal safety, awareness, security,
rape/acquaintance rape and sexual assault prevention, as well as the
prevention of burglary and vandalism.
Please contact the YSU Police Department for additional
information: 330-941-3527 (emergencies, dial 911 from any campus
phone) or visit http://www.ysu.edu/police. All students are
encouraged to program the YSU Police Department phone number
(330-941-3527) into their cell phones for immediate contact with a
YSU Police Dispatcher when a campus phone is not available or
convenient. |
