Books (Bought/Sold)
How to Find What Textbooks You Need:  The way your Bookstore finds out what textbook you will need is through communication with every department on campus.  They, not the Bookstore, decide which textbooks to adopt for classroom use.  When you are ready to purchase your textbooks, bringing your class schedule to the Bookstore will make finding your textbooks a lot easier.  The textbook sales floor is set up by department.  Shelf tags within each department are displayed for each textbook.  These tags are in sequential order according to catalog number (found in the Bulletin or on your class schedule).  Charts are available to guide you through the department, and there will always be sales associates available to assist you.

How Textbooks are Priced:  The Bookstore determines what to charge for textbooks based on cost, as with any other retailer.  A lot of publishers determine the price of the book themselves.  Other publishers don’t set a selling price.  For these publishers, the Bookstore adds a minimum standard markup to the purchase cost to cover its expense of operation.  Indeed textbooks are expensive, and publishers continue to increase prices.  Publishers profit the most for every textbook dollar.  A breakdown of where each dollar goes is available on their website.

The Bookstore provides you with as many used books as possible.  Used books are priced 25% off the new book price.  Used textbooks are purchased from students (during book buyback), national used book distributors, and sometimes from other college bookstores.

How to Sell Your Books:  The Bookstore will buy your textbook back at the end of the semester for half the new selling price (if you bought a used book, you’ll get about 67% of your money back) if the following conditions are met:

ˇ          The same textbook is readopted by the department for the following semester (same edition and copyright year).

ˇ          The Bookstore is not overstocked (meaning there is enough to cover the next class using the book).

ˇ          The textbook is in a condition that is resalable to the next customer buying it, e.g., if you try to sell back a study guide or workbook, it needs to be free of any answers and all pages must be intact.

ˇ          In most cases, if you bought a package (textbook bundled with other supplementary material) from the Bookstore, all parts of the package need to be included when selling it back.  In some cases, if you only have parts of the package, the Bookstore may be able to still buy it from you depending upon whether or not the other parts of the package are available from the distributors.

ˇ          The book is a current edition.

ˇ          You present your student ID.

Please understand that because the Bookstore is institutional, it is required to sell what each campus department adopts as required course material.  Sometimes, we can only sell new materials due to the nature of it.

If the Bookstore is overstocked on a title, the national used book distributor that actually conducts the buyback may have a demand for it.  They won’t be able to pay you half the new selling price as the Bookstore would, but you have the option of holding onto your textbook to use as a reference or you can try to sell it at the end of another semester.  (Some courses are only offered once a year, and the department may or may not adopt the textbook again.)  The distributor determines whether to buy it based on certain criteria.  Further information is available in the Bookstore.  Check out upcoming buyback dates and locations at http://www.ysubookstore.com.

Helpful Textbook Hints:  If you buy your textbook “new” and aren’t sure if you are dropping the class, keep the textbook in the condition you bought it.  Any “new” textbook returned to us with highlights, marks, or any worn condition will be given a “used” refund.  Detailed information regarding the Bookstore’s return policy for a refund will be made available to you at the time of purchase or by inquiring at http://www.ysubookstore.com.

If you buy a textbook “used” or you are sure you will not return your “new” textbook, put some type of identifying mark in your textbook in case it is lost or stolen.  In the case of your textbooks being stolen, report it to the YSU Police and Bookstore immediately.  The Bookstore will flag the textbook during book buyback and look for the identifying marks.  This is the reason student IDs are required when the Bookstore buys back your books.  It is not to inconvenience you—it’s for your protection.

Do not open passwords until you need them, as they are a one-time-use product with no refunds when opened.

The sooner you try to sell your textbook back during book buyback, the more likely the Bookstore will not be overstocked on that title.  Once the Bookstore is overstocked, the value of the textbook may drop to a wholesale price (meaning the used book distributor conducting the buyback may buy it for its inventory for off-campus distribution).  Once the price drops to a wholesale price, that price will not change throughout the buyback period.  When the book buyer tells you that you are getting a “wholesale price,” this means the YSU Bookstore will not be selling that copy of the textbook you just sold.

The sooner you shop for your textbooks, the more likely you will find a used copy.  If you are seeking a new textbook and only used copies are in stock, stop by Customer Service and request a “Textbook Special Order Form.”
