Emerging Leader Program
The Emerging Leader Program (ELP) is built on the understanding and expectation that leadership, like any skill, can be further learned and enhanced by all individuals.  In completion of ELP, students receive enhanced leadership skills that employers are looking for in their ideal candidates.  By participating in the dynamic program, students will experience opportunities that foster self-discovery, promote collaborative relationships, and emphasize empowering communities.  After completing the program, students will receive a notation on their academic transcript, recognition at the annual awards banquet, cords for graduation, and a leadership pin.  Perhaps more importantly, students will have further developed the qualities and skills that are needed to be successful, to create a better community, to help others, and to leave a positive legacy.

For more information, contact the Office of Student Life, Room 2083, Kilcawley Center, or call 330-941-4703.

On-Campus Employment
An Opportunity for All Students:  Students who wish to work during their college years are encouraged to work on campus. Positions are posted and students may apply directly to the employing department.  There are many kinds of campus jobs, most offering flexible hours and an additional chance to participate in campus life in an interesting way.  On-campus student employment is much more than just an opportunity to earn while learning!  Explore your opportunities as both a student and student employee.  More than 1,800 students are employed on campus each year.  Working in virtually every area of the University, student employees make a vital contribution to the University community.  In order to be employed on campus a student must be in good academic standing and currently enrolled for a minimum of one course of no less than three credits.  Students are employed in a wide variety of jobs.  Some require specific skills, but most provide on-the-job training.  Examples of positions include: Student Clerical Assistant; Lab Assistant; Tour Guide; and Grounds Worker.

How Do Students Find a Job?  On-campus jobs are posted in Kilcawley Center and in the Office of Career and Counseling Services, Jones Hall.  They may be accessed at
http://cc.ysu.edu/student-employment.  Students should review the positions available and apply directly to the employing department.  The lists are updated every two to three working days.

How Are Students Paid?
Most student employees begin by earning $6.85 per hour.  A small number of positions are paid with a stipend.  This is a lump-sum payment for a specific task or activity, such as serving as a referee for a sporting event.  Student employees may work no more than 20 hours per week, with the average student working approximately 15.  Students are typically paid bi-weekly and direct deposit is available and encouraged.

Why Work On Campus?  Most YSU students work while enrolled in school.  Working on campus not only allows students to earn while they learn, but there are a number of other benefits to the experience.  An on-campus job plugs students into the structure of the University.  In addition to the opportunity to get to know University faculty and staff in a more personal way, student employment gives students a first-hand view of how the University works.  Working on campus typically permits greater flexibility in scheduling.  Each employing department establishes their own guidelines, but most work hard to support student employees as students first, employees second.  An on-campus job entitles students, after their first semester of employment, to an early registration time.  This is done to allow students and their employing departments maximum flexibility in coordinating class and work schedules.  On-campus student employment may offer students valuable career-related experience.  Many student positions involve exposure to and opportunity with their future career interests.

Work-Study:  Students are paid from one of two funding sources, federal work-study or campus wages.  Federal work-study is need-based, part-time employment awarded to full-time or part-time students who demonstrate financial need.  The salary, payment schedule, and hiring process are identical to positions funded from campus wages.  Interested students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than February 15 to receive consideration for fall semester work-study funding.  Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.  For more information, call 330-941-3505 or 330-941-3506 to schedule an appointment with a Financial Aid Counselor who can assist with the application process.

For more information, contact the Office of Student Life, Room 2083, Kilcawley Center (330-941-4703), or visit http://cc.ysu.edu/student-employment.

On-Campus Housing
The University offers four residence halls for on-campus living: Cafaro House, Kilcawley House, Lyden House, and Weller House Apartments.  Prospective students, current students, and family and friends are welcome to take tours of these facilities, along with Christman Dining Commons. Tours may be requested at the front desk of any of the residence halls; appointments are not necessary.  Information on YSU’s residential campus community and an Application for University Housing are available by stopping in the Office of Housing & Residence Life, located on the first floor of Kilcawley House, or visit
http://housing.ysu.edu.

Penguin Productions
The Penguin Productions Board is a student group under the Division of Student Affairs charged with assessing, initiating, implementing, and evaluating major events for over 13,000 students on the campus of Youngstown State University.

In an effort to provide students with their preferences, Penguin Productions utilized existing resources and collaborated with the Office of the Registrar to initiate a campus-wide assessment. The information helped to identify possible performers, recognize departments where resources could be shared, create a discounted ticket program, and develop a method to sell tickets on campus for the convenience of the students.

For more information on upcoming events or on how to become a Penguin Production board member, please call 330-941-2242.

Student Diversity Programs
The Office of Student Diversity Programs works collaboratively with Youngstown State University to enhance the learning experience of all students.  Through the use of individualized programs and activities that build and nurture strong supportive relationships, the Office of Student Diversity Programs strives to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population.  The term “diverse” expands the singular definition of the past to include multilingual, multiethnic, multicultural, multireligious, and multiracial populations.

Success is defined as “when preparation meets opportunity.”  It is the goal of this organization to prepare students through the promotion of academic, social, career, and co-curricular experiences at YSU.  The Office of Student Diversity Programs enlists students in a mutual partnership to achieve their highest potential, creating a large base of skilled, mature individuals prepared to enter into today’s work force.

Mission:  To advance the concept of diversity and equal opportunity, through the promotion of positive race, language, ethnic, cultural, gender, religion, age, and community relations.

Goals:

·          To encourage representation of racial and ethnic populations historically underrepresented on the YSU campus.

·          To promote inclusion through educational experiences that build positive race and human relations on campus and within the community.

·          To offer students on campus an opportunity to study with their peers in a supportive environment to enrich the learning experience of all students.

·          To enrich the urban community environment through outreach and service to underrepresented populations within the Mahoning Valley and in the greater Youngstown, Ohio region.

Student Government Association
The student body of Youngstown State University is represented by the Student Government Association (SGA), which operates under constitutional powers granted by the University.  The legislative branch of Student Government is composed of representatives from the six undergraduate colleges—College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Fine and Performing Arts, College of Health and Human Services—as well as the School of Graduate Studies, in proportion to the enrollment of each.  All meetings of the SGA representatives are open to the student body.

The Student Government Association exercises the power to conduct student elections,  recommend students to serve as members of the joint faculty-student committees, provide student advocacy, and provide funds for student organizations for programs and events.  Since the SGA is the “student voice” on campus, students are encouraged to become actively involved.

The Office of Student Government is located in Room 2090, Kilcawley Center.  For more information, call 330-941-3591.
