Comprehensive Testing Center
The Comprehensive Testing Center encompasses Placement Testing, National and Graduate examinations, and Professional certifications.  Placement Testing is available on a flexible basis for all new and current YSU students.  For more information, call 330-941-1343, visit http://www.ysu.edu/cbpt/ or stop by the office at Room 242, Meshel Hall.

Hours:
Monday through Friday:  8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

ACT
Applications for the ACT are available from the Comprehensive Testing Center, Meshel Hall (330-941-3175) or the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Sweeney Hall (330-941-2000).

Composition and Reading Placement Test (CRPT)
A Composition Placement Test and COMPASSŪ Reading Test are required for all students* unless there is an automatic placement or exemption due to ACT/SAT scores.  Students will be informed what testing is needed once accepted to the University.

The Composition Placement Test is a 40-minute, timed writing sample; the COMPASSŪ Reading Test is an un-timed, computer-based reading comprehension exam.  The results of the placement tests are posted on each student’s ADM and PERMREC screens.  Students should be sure to consult their academic advisors for these results, which mandate (a) the composition course in which they must enroll in the Department of English, and (b) any required Reading and Study Skills course that may be necessary to improve reading deficiencies.  Mandated English 1539 or 1540 coursework, as well as Reading and Study Skills courses, must be completed by the student’s 36th semester hour.

Sample questions from the COMPASS reading test can be viewed at http://www.ysu.edu/cbpt/.

Foreign Language Placement Test
Students in AB degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and students in AB and BS programs in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math must satisfy a foreign language requirement for the degrees.  Students in the BA and BM degree programs in the College of Fine and Performing Arts should consult with an academic advisor in the College of Fine and Performing Arts to determine foreign language requirements.

Students who wish to begin their college-level foreign language study with 2600 Intermediate or above must take the Foreign Language Placement Test.  Students who have had some high school or college-level study may enroll in any 1550-level elementary foreign language course without taking the Foreign Language Placement Test.

Math Placement Test
A computer-based COMPASSŪ Math Test is required of all students* to assess their competency in mathematics.  Students will be placed in appropriate courses based upon the results of the COMPASSŪ Math Test.

A sample of the COMPASS Math Test is available at http://www.ysu.edu/cbpt/cmt.htm.

National, Professional & Graduate School Tests
National, professional and graduate test application forms and testing dates for tests such as the ACT, MAT, GRE, (subject only) LSAT, and PRAXIS are available in the Comprehensive Testing Center.  For more information, call 330-941-3175.

*Transfer students may not be required to take a Composition, Reading or Math exam if they have transfer credit for equivalent courses.  Transfer students should consult with their advisor to determine testing requirements.
