Colleges and Programs

College of Business Administration
The Warren P. Williamson, Jr. College of Business Administration programs are designed to prepare students to be leaders in business, government, nonprofit organizations, and society.  The College of Business Administration offers the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with majors in accounting, advertising and public relations, business economics, finance, general administration, human resource management, management information systems, and marketing management.  The following degrees are also offered:  Associate in Labor Studies, Associate of Arts in Business Administration, Associate in Technical Study, and the Master of Business Administration (MBA).

College of Education
The Beeghly College of Education offers programs leading to teacher licensure in the areas of Early Childhood Education (grades P-3), Middle Childhood Education (grades 4-9), Adolescent to Young Adult (grades 7-12), Multi-Age Education (grades P-12), Career-Technical Education in Integrated Business and Family and Consumer Sciences (grades 4-beyond), and Intervention Specialist (Special Education, K-12).

Appointments are 30 minutes.
During registration, appointments are 15 minutes.

Walk-ins only on first day of classes.  No appointments are made at this time.  Students are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis.
 

College of Fine and Performing Arts
The College of Fine and Performing Arts offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.  Students may major in applied music (performance), music history and literature, music recording, music theory and composition, communication studies, studio art, art history, telecommunication studies, and theater studies.  In conjunction with the College of Education, students may also major in art education, music education, speech education, and drama/theater education.

College of Health and Human Services
The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services offers programs leading to a certificate in emergency medical technician, medical coding, polysomnography, and infant/toddler; an associate’s degree in criminal justice, clinical laboratory technician, histotechnician, emergency medical technology, medical assisting technology, dental hygiene, dietetic technician, hospitality management, pre-kindergarten, and social services technology; a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, forensic science, allied health, clinical laboratory science, public health, respiratory care, school health education, family and consumer sciences education, family and consumer studies, food and nutrition, hospitality management, merchandising (fashion and interiors), exercise science, physical education (teaching or non-teaching), nursing, social work, and nursing home administration.  A Peace Officer Training Academy and a school nurse licensure program are also available.  The Department of Military Science officers a military science minor and an Army ROTC program.  Aerospace studies and an Air Force ROTC program are offered through a partnership with Kent State University.  Graduate programs leading to master’s degrees are offered in criminal justice, public administration, health and human services, nursing, public health, physical therapy, and social work.  A graduate program leading to a certificate in healthcare management is also available.

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences provides much of the general education component for all degrees offered by the University in addition to offering 20 majors in liberal arts, social sciences, and the humanities.  The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of General Studies and Associate of Arts degrees, as well as certificate programs.  CLASS offers a variety of interdisciplinary study programs, some of which offer certificates, minors, or majors.  These are:  Africana Studies, American Studies, Islamic Studies, Historic Preservation, Judaic and Holocaust Studies, Women’s Studies, Working Class Studies, Gerontology, Peace and Conflict Studies, and the Global Education Program.  The college consists of the following departments:  Economics, English, Foreign Languages & Literatures, Geography, History, Philosophy & Religious Studies, Political & Social Science, Psychology, and Sociology & Anthropology.

College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
With the state’s emphasis on STEM education and with the deep national need for more technically trained individuals, Youngstown State University is now poised to become a regional and national model for engineering and science education.  Working with business partners in our community, YSU STEM students have the opportunity to stimulate economic growth and develop new technologies.  Real-world experiences abound for YSU STEM students, from internships and engineering co-ops to working with faculty on research projects.  The College of STEM provides programs of excellence in engineering and engineering technology which are ABET-accredited as well as physical and biological sciences, computer and information sciences, and mathematics which are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of College & Schools leading to the following degrees:  Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Applied Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Technical Studies.  A certificate in construction management technology is also offered.

Metro College/University Outreach
Metro College develops and administers courses and programs outside the traditional degree programs through Continuing Education, Contract Training, and the Center for Creative Retirement programs.  Both credit and non-credit courses are offered at off-campus locations, making academic programs, along with administrative and support services, available to both traditional and non-traditional students.  Evening undergraduate classes are offered at the Metro Boardman location.

Through Metro College, YSU seeks to make the lifelong process of education possible for the adult with family and work obligations and for traditional students who can benefit from off-campus evening class scheduling.

ROTC-Military Science
The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is a series of elective courses available to YSU students who want to develop their leadership potential and better prepare for post-college careers.  Enrolling in the courses can take place at any time as long as the student has two years of school remaining.  The Army ROTC program offers a range of scholarships for qualified students.  The Office of the YSU-ROTC is located in Room 1112, Stambaugh Stadium (330-941-3205).

University Honors Program
The University Honors Program is designed to create a continuing community of intellectual excellence.  Exceptional students, who are brought together from diverse disciplines, are challenged with extraordinary courses and learning experiences outside the classroom in order to develop their full cultural and intellectual potential.  The program is intended to foster interdisciplinary interaction, self-expression, experimentation, leadership, and academic excellence.  The unique academic achievement of University Honors Program students are recognized with an Honors Diploma.

The qualifications for students to join the program are as follows:
  • University Scholars
  • Presidential or Dean’s Scholars
  • Students in the top 15% of their high school graduating class and with an ACT of 26 or SAT of 1160
  • Current YSU students having completed at least 12 semester hours of college-level study (not to include remedial courses) with a GPA of 3.4
  • First-semester students either in the top 15% of their high school graduating class or with an ACT score of 26 (or combined SAT of 1160)
     
The Leslie H. Cochran University Scholars Program provides a full-cost scholarship awarded to 40 incoming students per year.  The minimum criteria for consideration is an ACT of 28 or SAT of 1240 (1860 composite for candidates who took the new SAT) and in the top 15% of the high school graduating class.  University Scholars must maintain a 3.5 GPA, complete 60 hours of community service per year, live in the Honors Residence Hall (Cafaro House), be a member of the Honors Program, and be involved in co-curricular activities.  Students who join the Honors Program and who have completed a minimum of 6 credits of honors coursework may be eligible to apply for available replacement positions in the University Scholars Program.  For more information, visit the Office of Honors Programs, Cafaro House (330-941-2772), or visit http://www.ysu.edu/honors.
